Blue Owl strengthens Japan leadership with senior institutional hire
Blue Owl Capital has appointed former Barclays executive Takeo Ikemori as co-head of its Japan business, reinforcing the alternative asset manager’s expansion in one of the world’s largest institutional investment markets, according to a report by the Japan Times.
Ikemori joins the firm’s Tokyo office as head of Japan institutional capital and will serve alongside Yoichi Nakamura, who leads Blue Owl’s private wealth business in Japan, as the firm’s representatives in the country.
The appointment supports Blue Owl’s strategy of growing its presence among Japanese institutional investors following the launch of its Tokyo office in 2023. The firm, which manages approximately $319 billion in assets, has been steadily expanding its local team as demand for private market investments increases.
In his new role, Ikemori will focus on distributing Blue Owl’s private markets offerings, including private credit, real estate and GP stakes strategies. Target clients include banks, insurance companies and regional financial institutions seeking greater exposure to alternative assets.
Ikemori brings extensive experience in institutional distribution and financial institutions coverage. Before joining Blue Owl, he led Natixis’ financial institutions group in Tokyo and previously spent 16 years at Barclays, where he held senior leadership positions covering many of Japan’s largest financial institutions.
The appointment comes as international private capital managers continue to increase their investment in Japan, encouraged by rising institutional allocations to private markets and a changing macroeconomic backdrop that has renewed investor interest in alternative assets.
Blue Owl has also recently indicated that conditions in the private credit market have stabilised following earlier redemption pressures, with the firm reporting renewed investor inflows from multiple international markets.
