The Challenge: Home Office, Bedrooms & Nursery Makeover
The clients reached out to Decorilla to furnish a Hudson Valley home with an organic modern direction. Four room makeovers required full design from the ground up, while others held partial furniture. The brief covered a home office, two lower-level bedrooms, and a nursery doubling as guest quarters. The biggest challenge was completing the project within a tight December window, as the designer had to fulfill a series of tasks:
- Plan a shared home office around the existing desk orientation, with built-in bookshelves behind it
- Furnish the primary bedroom around the California King already on site, using warm neutrals with rust and deep green accents
- Carry the same woodsy material logic into the secondary bedroom

Design Inspiration: Creative Room Makeovers
The clients arrived with a clear instinct for where warmth was missing in the house. The place came across as stark. They wanted especially the lower-level bedrooms to undo that feeling without resorting to softness as the only fix. Pinterest carried them toward something more grounded, with woodsier finishes and a palette that absorbs light. Rust and deep green came up as accent notes frequently, emphasizing what was requested in their brief.
Function shaped the inspiration as much as mood did. Organic modern, in the way the clients used the term, worked less as a style label than as a working logic for the country house. The lower level catches limited daylight, which meant the inspiration leaned warm by necessity. Linen accessories showed up across bedroom and nursery references because the material registers texture under lamplight in a way cotton sateen flattens out.
Initial Concepts: Finding the Right Designer
Decorilla’s team identified two professionals for the project, both with strong track records in room remodels and a clear read on the organic modern direction the client wanted. Lara D. and Nathalie I. came in with proposals that interpreted the brief differently, giving the client a real choice.
Lara’s proposal closely matched how the client described the house when they first wrote in. The palette was warm earthy neutral, and the setup woodsy enough to soften the stark feel. At the same time, she kept the luxe edge the brief asked for.
In Nathalie’s moodboard, a leather-headboard bed sat against elegant vertical paneling, with a bouclé chair pulled toward the window for reading. The palette held to cream offset by rust, and the overall mood image carried the lodge-adjacent quality the client kept circling on Pinterest.
The client picked Nathalie’s vision, and their feedback later in the process confirmed the alignment: “The latest renderings of the nursery look AMAZING! I’m going to go ahead and approve them, please send through the shopping list asap so I can start getting this set up!”

Elegant Home Office
The office came together as the most considered room in the project, and the one where the brief’s contradictions resolved most cleanly. The client asked for organic modern with luxe touches at first. Later on, they reconsidered it in favor of a darker, moodier design with a vintage edge and a dramatic rug. Nathalie held both directions in the same room. Deep navy anchors the walls, while warm wood and brass keep the scheme from reading severe. The result promotes focus and creates a cozy working environment at once.
Navy this saturated could easily flatten a small office, especially one already short on daylight. The panel moldings break up the surface to avoid this problem, and the recessed shelving niches give the eye somewhere to land. The LED strips under the floating shelves wash light upward and keep the dark paint from absorbing the room. Picture lights above the artwork also bring focus to the wall. Finally, the frosted glass wall, which the client wanted preserved, now functions as a soft daylight source against the dark surroundings.
The desk does the work the client kept circling on. A substantial wood piece with a thick top and tapered legs sits centered on the rug, vintage in feeling yet contemporary in realization. The leather wingback replaced several earlier options the client rejected as too modern or too office-supply. Its patina reads as inherited furniture, which is the register they pushed for from the first round of revisions. Brass on the mushroom lamp ties to the picture light above the art, giving the metals a coherent line through the room.
Blending Function with Style
Function shaped the layout as much as mood. The desk orientation the client flagged keeps the working sightline open. Floating shelves replaced the built-in bookshelves they initially asked for, which freed the space behind the desk for art and gave more flexible storage across two walls. Space for hanging certificates, which the client also mentioned in the original questionnaire, is reserved on the paneled wall. A wall-mounted television sits off to the side, where the second leather chair also gives the client’s husband somewhere to sit during shared use.
Primary Bedroom Design
The primary bedroom makeover is where the brief sits closest to the surface, and where Nathalie pulled the room furthest from its original stark state. Plaster-toned walls and dark ceiling beams add the woodsy register the client kept returning to in their inspiration notes. The result reads warm without going rustic, which is the exact line they wanted held.
The bed does the structural work. A low-profile platform in cognac leather grounds the room at the height the eye wants for rest. Its wraparound headboard, meanwhile, softens what would otherwise be a hard wall meeting. The art above carries the palette in compressed form. Soft blocks of rust, sage, ochre, and slate read as a key for the rest of the room, as each of those tones appears somewhere else in the scheme.
The asymmetric brass mirror across the room picks up the artwork’s edges, while the small lamp with a pleated shade on the dresser adds a vintage note highlighted in the brief.
The chocolate velvet bolsters carry the headboard tone forward. The bedding pulls in the opposite direction: bouclé throws and oatmeal linen sit against the leather to keep contact points soft.
Dark-stained beams against pale plaster lower the visual ceiling, which gives the room a sense of enclosure it didn’t have before. The client had asked about texturizing certain walls as accents, and the beams accomplish something similar overhead. Recessed lighting tucked between the beams handles ambient illumination, leaving the table lamps to do the warmer work at bedside.
Wood nightstands in light oak balance the dark beams. A textured cream rug runs wider than the bed and pulls forward to the seating area, where the bouclé chair gives the room a second function for reading.
Second Bedroom Makeover
The second bedroom takes the same organic, modern foundation as the primary, but pushes it toward a more graphic aesthetic. Where the first room held to warm earth tones across every surface, this one introduces a high-contrast pattern. The pop of color is also stronger in the rust velvet chair. The bouclé bed, however, gives the room a softer center than its counterpart down the hall.
A curved bouclé headboard wraps the king bed, positioned as the brief specified, in matte ivory. Black ground pillows with a white linear pattern sit at the center, layered against ivory shams and tonal striped lumbars. The horse painting above carries the rust note into the wall plane and ties it to the velvet chair across the room. Beam-stained ceilings repeat from the primary bedroom makeover, holding two rooms together as a pair.
Floor pattern is where this room departs. A geometric rug in black and ivory, with the half-circle and stripe motif, brings a modernist note into a scheme. The shearling ottomans at the foot of the bed break up the rug’s hard graphics and reintroduce texture at floor level.
Rust velvet on the channel-tufted chair gives the room its anchor color. Rattan dome lamps flank the bed in place of conventional shades, and the tall woven floor lamp beside the chair extends that material logic upward.
The natural-finish dresser on the far wall pulls the warmth back toward neutral. A pleated lamp on the dresser repeats the vintage cue from the primary bedroom. The wavy white mirror beside the closet doors adds an irregular shape against the rectangular openings around it. Soft drapes in muted sage filter the bright light coming through the sliders, which compensates for the room’s stark vibe the client had flagged early on.
Multifunctional Nursery Makeover
The nursery resolves the brief’s hardest balancing act. It had to function as a baby room, a nanny’s overnight quarters, and a guest room without leaning too far into any one of them. Nathalie kept the palette neutral with sage and butter-yellow accents, which holds the kid-friendly register while staying coherent with the rest of the house.
Wallpaper carries the room’s playful register. A cream ground with butter-yellow wavy stripes runs across the sloped attic ceiling and down the walls, softening the geometry of the dormer and the skylight wells. The pattern reads abstract enough that it won’t date quickly as the child grows.
The Babyletto Hudson crib in washed natural finish, which the client already owned and required Nathalie to design around, sits as a quiet anchor in light wood.
The bouclé glider in sage extends the dresser’s color across the room and gives the nanny somewhere to nurse or rock the baby through the night. A tall floor lamp beside the glider handles night feedings. Two area rugs split the floor by function: a dinosaur-pattern wool rug marks the play zone for tummy time, while a smaller round rug softens the floor around the crib.
A sage-painted dresser doubles as the changing station, with the changing pad recessed into a tray on top. Tucked beneath the lower portion of the sloped ceiling, a built-in window seat with storage cubbies below recovers the room‘s most awkward dimension.
Lighting takes its cue from the inspiration board. A rice-paper hot air balloon pendant hovers above the play zone, sitting in dialogue with the skylight that opens across it.
Design Details: Sourcing the Perfect Pieces
Decorilla’s 3D renderings gave the client a clear read on each room transformation before a single piece was ordered. They could test proportions and walk through layouts, making necessary changes early in the process.
