What We Know About Tate Brothers’ Trump Connections

Topline

Andrew and Tristan Tate—influential figures in the so-called manosphere that intersects with President Donald Trump’s base—were arrested in Miami on Saturday, more than a year after Romanian authorities lifted travel restrictions on them, reportedly at the Trump administration’s urging.

Key Facts

U.S. Marshals arrested the Tate brothers for extradition to the United Kingdom, where they face more than 50 combined charges, which include rape and numerous charges of abusing women, along with indecent images of a child.

The brothers left Romania—where they face similar charges and were previously restricted from leaving—in February 2025, after Trump officials reportedly urged Romania to lift travel restrictions on Andrew Tate, the Financial Times reported at the time, citing unnamed sources.

Romanian foreign minister Emil Hurezeanu confirmed he had a discussion on the topic with Trump special envoy Richard Grenell at the Munich Security Conference in February 2025, but Romanian officials said the U.S. didn’t pressure them to make any decision.

Trump’s eldest son, Don Jr., publicly spoke out against Andrew Tate’s detention in Romania, calling it “absolute insanity” in a May 2023 tweet and appeared on a livestream with him in 2024, telling him, “you’ve got people attacking you as far as I’m concerned,” while Trump ally and billionaire Elon Musk has also backed Andrew Tate’s take on U.K. politics in a January 2025 tweet.

Trump’s youngest son, Barron, also cultivated a relationship with Andrew Tate, as Barron helped with outreach to young men during Trump’s 2024 campaign, multiple outlets reported, though a spokesperson for the Tates previously told The New York Times its findings about Barron’s connections to Andrew Tate were “fake news.”

The Tates have repeatedly praised Trump and urged his followers to vote for him in 2024—Andrew Tate said he spoke to Barron after the 2024 assassination attempt against Trump, telling reporters, “I’m very close with the Trump family. I know them well.”

Crucial Quote

Trump himself has said little about the Tates—when the Romanian travel restrictions were lifted, he said he knew “nothing about that,” adding, “we’ll check it out. We’ll let you know.”

Chief Critic

An attorney for the brothers said they are innocent and accused the U.K. of violating an agreement with Romania that allegedly said British authorities would not seek extradition while their cases in Romania are ongoing.

What To Watch For

The Tate brothers will appear in federal court in Miami next week.

Tangent

Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has spoken out against the Tates and announced a state criminal probe into them in March after their arrival in his state last year. The Department of Homeland Security’s anti-trafficking agents have also reportedly been investigating them for years, The New York Times reported, though federal officials have not publicly confirmed a probe.

Key Background

The brothers, who have dual American and British citizenship, were arrested after dozens of new charges were added to charges brought against them last year. Andrew Tate faces 42 charges, and Tristan Tate faces 17 charges, largely accusing them of abusing women near London between 2010 and 2017. They were arrested in Romania in 2022 and charged with human trafficking, rape and forming a criminal gang to sexually exploit women. They also face civil suits in the U.K. and the U.S. The brothers are self-described misogynists who instruct their followers to treat women as property. Andrew Tate is a self-described “pimp” who created the “Pimping Hoes Degree” that taught followers how to recruit women into “sexual slavery.”
