Red white and blue colors are used in the bed linens of a patriotic boys bedroom as Americana decorating ideas

Hello and welcome back! It’s been a minute since I’ve been able to jump on here and share homemaking ideas with you. My family has been busy tending to our lavender farm during harvest time. So fun, and also so, so tiring!

Luckily, today’s project is a quick and easy bedroom refresh for my son. (See the original boys bedroom here.) He has always loved classic Americana style with its red, white and blue color scheme. I do too, so I was excited for this change. Plus, we just celebrated America’s birthday, so the timing was perfect.

I didn’t go crazy in this room. Muted and classic styles have my heart and they work well with my “use what you have” approach to decorating. This is the type of project you can complete in a day, while still making it feel extra special.

I dove in with a nice cleaning, simple linen swaps and thoughtful decor. In other words, I added a homemaker’s touch.

Cleaning and Rug Swap

First off, I moved the bed to clean underneath it and change out the rug. A nice cleaning and tidy alone is often enough to reset a bedroom, but I also wanted to use a neutral rug that I knew would look good with patriotic colors.

I also wiped walls, doors and all the little nooks and crannies that don’t always make in into the weekly cleaning rotation. It feels so nice to have a freshly cleaned bedroom!

Americana-Style Curtains

Next, I traded out the green plaid curtains for some simple white with blue striped curtains.

I like their subtlety and the way these curtains can be used anywhere for other occasions or no occasion at all. If I’m looking for something like a rug or curtains, I want to be able to use it more than once a year.

Red, White and Blue Bed Linens

The same ideas holds true for bed linens. Coordinating colors in my scheme makes everything feel cohesive, but still allows for lots of other uses.

Note the beige and rusty/red striped bed sheets. I love them paired with vintage Americana decorating ideas, but they would also look wonderful in a Fall-themed bedroom, don’t you think?

The sheets and light blue coverlet are from Quince. You’ll find all the links here. I adore their high-quality linen textures!

The blue quilt was made by a friend and the old baby quilt just happened to have the red, white and blue colors I was after. This bedroom was a perfect place to display it. (See how I made the baby quilt with no measuring!)

Simple Americana Decor Ideas

Lastly, I added a few simple touches of vintage decor and patriotic accents.

An American flag is a nice way to bring our patriotic colors together and we had the large one from outdoor decorating in years past. We hung that up along with a vintage framed version in this bedroom. You could use the same idea for a front door or entryway.

Likewise, banners, wreaths, throw pillows, blankets and pretty much anything that comes in either the style or color that fits your theme can be used for decor.

For this room, I used whatever I had that could be seen as vintage Americana decorating ideas. That included random pillow covers, old lunch boxes, old bowling pins, and even vintage books with simple red and blue covers. All were items we already owned that work well together for our theme.

To me, the effect is a room that feels genuine, rather than “decorated”. It’s simple, subtle, timeless and inexpensive to pull off. Just the way I like it!

My son now has a bedroom filled with colors and decor that reflect his personality, and I didn’t have to pick up a paint brush. This is just one more space that reminds me how valuable a homemaker’s thoughtful touch can be.
