This New Smart Toaster Displays Your Photos as It Toasts Bread

My breakfast usually comprises sunny-side up egg, toast, and coffee. I love making it almost every day, except for the toasting part. Feels boring. The toaster hasn’t gotten much of an update in ages, other than a transparent window through which you can see your bread getting toasted. Boston-based brand Revolution Cooking understood that and wanted to add something extra to the unassuming countertop appliance. The new Revolution R180 Connect Plus Toaster gives the humble appliance a smart display onboard.

When not toasting your bread, the Revolution R180 Connect Plus Toaster becomes a digital photo frame, displaying a slideshow of up to 24 photos of your choice. Thanks to Wi-Fi connectivity, the toaster also shows time, date, and weather updates.

This doesn’t feel like overkill, unlike other smart kitchen appliances. Instead, I can spend my slow mornings playing with the toaster while glimpsing my favorite memories, the time, and the day’s weather forecast without touching the phone. Feels like a win-win situation.

The Revolution R180 Connect Plus Toaster toasts your bread and displays your photos while sitting idle. The full-color 7-inch LCD touchscreen at the front also displays toast types and your most-used settings as it counts down, letting you know when the toast is done.

Priced at $449.95, the smart toaster features 38 bread types and 7 browning levels. You also get gluten-free settings and a 3-tap interface for effortless precision. Now, I get that pricing may seem steep, but given its functionality, I think it would be a worthy splurge.

According to Serious Eats, which went hands-on with the toaster, you can swipe through screens to find your ideal settings, with an icon indicating the doneness of the toast, for items like waffles, hamburger buns, white bread, and multigrain bread. The high-wattage toaster can toast a lot back-to-back without breaks. The mechanized lift lowers and raises the toast. When the crumb tray needs emptying, a friendly reminder pops on screen.

The smart toaster is equipped with Revolution’s InstaGLO heating technology and built-in sensors. It adjusts the heat depending on bread type and moisture levels. Interestingly, the toaster also sears toast to crisp up the edges and decrease burning. Now, that certainly delights me because I won’t have to contend with burned toast anymore.

Another highlight is its 38 bread types, including white, brown, and multi-grain bread, sourdough, bagels, waffles, pastries, English muffins, and more. Moreover, it lets me select whether the bread is fresh, frozen, or needs reheating. What’s not to love?

Since it is still a two-slice stainless steel toaster, it features extra-wide slots to accommodate thicker bread. There is also a Toastie Press mode that lets you make toasties, paninis, and quesadillas in the toaster, but this accessory needs to be bought separately. I will certainly be putting my money on the Revolution R180 Connect Plus Toaster. Would you?
