‘Floating shelves and hooks can be both functional and visually appealing,’ explains Laura Watson, interior design expert at IKEA’s Online Interior Design Service. She continues. ‘Vertical storage solutions utilise otherwise wasted wall space while displaying items that reflect your personality. This also helps to keep the floor area clear, avoiding the room feeling cluttered.’
If you want to embark on a project similar to Gordon and Tana’s hanging copper pots, the number one kitchen storage mistake to avoid is not planning carefully. Installing hooks and shelves is a time consuming process, and if you want them to part of the decor, it’s important to ideate around how you can use them to elevate your home, rather than drag it down.
Laura advises: ‘Jumping into space-saving projects without a clear plan can lead to inefficient use of space and resources. Taking the time to measure, plan and visualise the layout can result in a more effective and aesthetically-pleasing outcome.’
The other striking element of Gordon and Tana’s space is the use of stainless steel in their kitchen. Though our Instagram feeds are inundated with images that select this finish for every surface, the couple demonstrates that you can go much more subtle.
Jen Nash, Head of Design at Magnet recommends: ‘If you’re uncertain about committing to an entirely stainless steel kitchen, integrating this material through smaller components of your culinary space, such as an island, butcher’s block, or on countertops, serves as a graceful entry point for diversifying your kitchen’s visual appeal and functionality.’
‘A stainless steel kitchen island or countertop contrasts beautifully with surrounding cabinetry which is perhaps more traditional,’ continues Jen. ‘Bringing a balance between cold and warmer physicality to the space, the result can be a unique blend of industrial and organic elements that is a design statement in itself.’
If you want to integrate just one stainless steel element into your kitchen, Jen advises beginning with the work surfaces. She states: ‘If you can’t decide between stainless steel cabinets or countertops, I would point out that opting for the latter has the added benefit of providing a very hygienic and easy-to-clean surface for food preparation.’
