This means introducing antiques strategically and choosing one or two pieces that interrupt the uniformity. In Sofía’s living room, the effect comes through in the carved detailing of her accent chairs and the aged-looking finishes that sit alongside the more contemporary couches.
‘The key is not filling the whole room with antiques. One strong piece is usually enough,’ Tasha says. ‘In a neutral living room, that might be an old pine side table next to a clean linen sofa, a vintage cabinet against a plain wall, or a framed mirror with some age to it. Those pieces add warmth without making the room feel heavy.’
The right balance comes down to scale, particularly when working with antiques. In Sofía’s room, ornate pieces sit alongside large upholstery and open space, giving each element enough room to register without making the scheme feel crowded.
‘I also think antiques give neutral spaces a little imperfection, which is important,’ Tasha says. ‘If everything is beige, white, and perfectly matched, the room can feel untouched. A piece with a few marks or a finish that has aged naturally makes the space feel more comfortable.’
That is perhaps what gives Sofía’s living room its character. The architecture and proportions are undeniably grand, but the furniture doesn’t feel as though it was chosen from a single collection. The contrast between tailored upholstery and pieces with visible age makes the room feel truly collected.
‘My advice is to watch scale and function first,’ Tasha adds. ‘Do not buy an antique just because it is charming. Make sure the drawers work, the chair is sturdy, and the piece actually fits where you want to use it. The best antiques are the ones that can still be used, not just looked at.’
Sofía’s space shows you don’t need a daring color scheme to create a room with depth. In the most successful cases, the most effective contrast comes from pairing old with new.
