Meet First Alaskan Hard-Sided Camper With Composite Walls
Alaskan Campers is well known for its telescoping hard-sided campers that tend to be heavier, but its latest HS 640 aims to change that. The company has built a completely new foundation for the camper, specifically to reduce weight. Claimed as the lightest hard-sided Alaskan yet, it will fit a wider range of trucks, including many half-ton pickups, with standard 6.5-foot beds from Toyota, Ford, Ram, and Chevrolet.
The key element in making a lighter truck camper is the composite wall system. To reduce weight in the HS 640, a new wall system is developed using 1.5-inch structural insulated panels with high-density PIR foam and fiberglass skins to create a rigid, rot-proof wall with R-11 thermal performance in the camper shell.
It also uses a patent-pending aluminum and PVC thermal break hybrid frame that reduces thermal bridging at key structural points, improving interior temperature stability. The reduced weight puts less strain on your truck, improving drivability.
The exterior is distinguished by the geometric form and tailgate-friendly footprint, paired with lighter dual-pane acrylic windows and a custom two-piece Tern Overland entry door. You can also choose from white and grey color options or match the paint color of your pickup truck.
Other exterior highlights include dimmable lighting, multiple power outlets, a 30-amp shore power hookup, and a dedicated Starlink connection. Optional accessories like MOLLE storage panels, no-drill exterior cargo trays, a 180-degree awning, an exterior ladder, and more for further convenience.
Autoevolution magazine notes that the HS 640’s interior is created in partnership with a yacht interior designer, resulting in a luxe and comfy cabin. Here, you can choose from four interior cabinet colors to match your style. Inside, you have two layout options.
The first one emphasizes open room and relaxation with an L-shaped corner dining lounge. It features a queen-size bed at the front of the camper, a kitchenette on one side wall, and seating on the other. The second layout is nearly the same but differs by swapping some seating for utility, adding a full-height storage cabinet. Both layouts exclude a bathroom, which can be considered a downside by many of us, but it is one of the techniques that lowers the overall weight of the contraption.

You can also customize your camper’s core systems, including power, water, and climate control, to enhance your off-grid capabilities and comfort. It comes standard with two Expion 360 GC2 162Ah ea/324Ah batteries, and you can add more as needed, as well as a Victron Multiplus 2 3000 W Inverter and a touchscreen control center for added convenience.
The HS 640 truck camper measures 6.4 feet long and 7.2 feet high, which looks sufficient for campers of standard height.
