John Lennon’s 1971 Tittenhurst Home: Vertical Storage Genius
In 1971, John Lennon and Yoko Ono resided at Tittenhurst Park, a 72-acre Georgian estate located in Berkshire, South East England. While the property is widely celebrated as the backdrop for the Imagine album, its interiors, or more specifically, its shelving, delivered a masterclass in architectural practicality.
Chief among its design successes was the estate’s custom library: An installation of white built-in shelving that utilized every available inch of vertical storage space.
Rather than relying on freestanding bookshelves that leave underutilized gaps above, the shelving was fitted directly against the wall, stretching upward to meet the crown molding.
