Inside a Timeless Santa Barbara Spanish Revival Home
The best design decisions are often the ones you don’t notice at first glance. More often than not, the answer lies in the details that don’t shout for attention: thoughtful proportions, layered materials, and subtle architectural tweaks that quietly make everything work. This Spanish Revival home proves just how powerful those ‘invisible decisions’ can be.
For designer Tessa Platner, that’s exactly the point. ‘The details that appear simple require a lot of thoughtfulness,’ she says, a philosophy that underpins every inch of this house nestled in the foothills of Santa Barbara. Although rich in character, years of renovations had gradually eroded the property’s soul. Working alongside the architect, Tessa spent three years reimagining the home for a young family, favoring careful restoration over dramatic reinvention.

Despite its enviable setting and beautiful Spanish Revival bones, the property wasn’t quite living up to its potential. Years of home renovations had left the interiors feeling disjointed and disconnected. But rather than imposing a new identity on the house, Tessa saw an opportunity to uncover the one that had always been there.

‘Our approach focused on restoring the home to a more soulful and cohesive interior scheme,’ Tessa explains. ‘We redesigned many of the living spaces, refined the flow throughout the home, and introduced new steel doors and custom windows to connect the interiors with the surrounding landscape. The result is a layered and refined sanctuary that reflects the property’s history and surroundings.’ But while the interventions were substantial, they never feel intrusive.
‘We largely respected the original footprint, but many of the interiors were carefully reconfigured to improve flow, proportion, and continuity throughout the home. Earlier renovations had left the spaces feeling disconnected, so the focus became creating an inviting and comfortable family home,’ Tessa continues. ‘We dramatically opened the home and restored classic California Spanish Revival style while thoughtfully considering form and function.’
Kitchen: A custom oak island topped with Taj Mahal stone anchors the kitchen, while vintage Delph tiles and 1920s milk glass pendants lend the newly designed space the character of a room that’s always belonged. Counter Stools by Summer Studio.

It’s tempting to think the success of a home lies in its standout moments – a statement kitchen island, a showstopping fireplace, or an enviable collection of art. But the real magic here is harder to put your finger on. Every room feels connected in this home, not because they’re decorated in exactly the same way, but because a shared language of materials and restraint unites them.
‘Materiality became the defining language of the project. The palette draws directly from the surrounding Santa Barbara landscape: warm ivories, olive, tobacco, walnut, aged iron, and soft mineral tones layered throughout the interiors,’ says Tessa. Rather than relying on bold contrasts, she allowed texture to take the lead. Plaster, stone, linen, aged wood, iron, and vintage lighting repeat throughout the home, while bespoke joinery and handcrafted details add depth without ever feeling ornamental.
As Tessa explains, this helps to ‘create cohesion through texture and patina rather than contrast.’ Here, every material, finish, and bespoke detail has been chosen to support the home’s original architecture rather than compete with it. ‘Every decision was approached with care and restraint to ensure the home retained its original soul while functioning more fluidly for contemporary living,’ she adds. ‘Equally important was creating spaces that felt warm, livable, and genuinely comfortable for family life.’

Rather than recreating a traditional Spanish Revival interior, Tessa chose to reinterpret the style through a distinctly Californian lens. ‘Influences range from Mediterranean farmhouses to historic Santa Barbara estates, though the overall feeling remains calm and welcoming,’ Tessa explains. ‘It embodies the balance between refinement and relaxed California living that shaped the home as a whole. The atmosphere feels calm, timeless, and deeply restorative,’ she explains of the spirit of the home.
Calm without feeling sparse, layered without appearing overly styled, the living room immediately establishes the design style that runs throughout the house. ‘The main living room is a vaulted space with reclaimed timber beams; it is pared back and minimal with soft earthy undertones,’ she explains.
‘The tapered fireplace and archways were added to the space to center it, and there is a nod to vintage with the kilim rug and painted 19th-century Swedish cabinets, as well as mid-century-inspired Danish-style velvet upholstered armchairs.’ A commissioned artwork by Burkina Faso-based artist Kader Boly feels perfectly at home as the pride of place here – ‘he created a beautiful piece which honors the family and their recently departed pet. A much-loved and celebrated part of the family.’

While the palette remains understated, the dining room proves that restraint doesn’t have to mean playing it safe. ‘The dining table and built-ins were custom-made to fit the space, and we sourced them from a Los Angeles-based lighting designer,’ says Tessa. Above, a sculptural wrought iron chandelier introduces just the right amount of drama overhead without detracting from the home’s relaxed mood. The biggest surprise, however, comes in the form of the artwork. ‘The featured painting is a touch of contemporary abstract expressionism, adding color and a conversational element to an otherwise restrained space,’ Tessa explains.
Bar: Richly veined Italian marble climbs from the countertop to the backsplash, while cabinetry painted in Farrow & Ball’s Dead Salmon gives the bar a warm, cocooning feel. Kitchen, deVOL.

Tucked away beneath a gently arched opening, the home bar introduces a richer, more sun-baked tone. ‘With the bar, we wanted to add some more excitement, so this moody space is painted in Farrow & Ball Dead Salmon to complement the rich Italian marble that runs up the backsplash throughout the space,’ Tessa explains. ‘The ceiling-flush-mounted light is made from bottle glass, and the vintage kilim rug references the traditional direction of Spanish Revival homes.’
Primary Bedroom: Soft linen drapery, exposed timber beams, and layers of natural textures create a restful primary suite designed for slowing down, with custom furniture and Rose Tarlow lighting.

Bathed in warm, muted tones and layered with tactile natural materials, the primary bedroom has an unmistakable sense of calm. ‘The primary bedroom needed a deeper tone for unwinding, so we chose a linen called ‘Sonoma’ from our Platner Heritage Collection,’ says Tessa. Rather than relying on bold color, she built warmth through layers of texture instead. Custom-designed nightstands sit alongside lamps by Rose Tarlow, while a beautifully printed linen covers the bench ottoman at the foot of the bed. An olive-green wool rug grounds the space beneath a mid-century Danish sheepskin lounge chair, adding just enough contrast to give the otherwise pared-back room a sense of character.

Much like the rest of the home, the primary bathroom proves that luxury doesn’t have to shout. Rather than layering decorative details, Tessa allowed a carefully edited palette of natural materials to become the focal point. ‘We chose French limestone floors to ground the space and create a spa-like feel,’ Tessa explains. ‘The marble shower enclosure and bench contrast the handmade glazed finish of the zellige tiles. The vanity softens the space with oak-stained doors and undermounted ceramic bowl sinks, and feels relaxed with the mix of polished nickel and oil-rubbed bronze hardware,’ she adds.
Powder Room: A bespoke curved marble sink, antique-style mirror, vintage iron sconces, and terracotta floor tiles give the powder room the character of a space that has evolved over time.

Small in scale but rich in detail, in the powder room craftsmanship takes center stage, with every element chosen to feel as though it could have belonged to the house for generations. ‘The powder room is a more refined traditional space where we used antique-pedrables terracotta tiles, paired with a custom curved-corner marble sink. The mirror and the lights evoke a vintage feel,’ she adds.
Guest House: Wrapped in greenery and overlooking the pool, the detached casita mirrors the timeless architecture and restrained material palette of the main house, all framed by sweeping views of the Santa Barbara foothills.

Sitting beside the pool and surrounded by lush Santa Barbara gardens, the detached casita feels less like a guest house and more like a natural continuation of the main residence. ‘The casita feels a bit more of a casual space for guests to comfortably enjoy while the visual language continues,’ says Tessa. ‘The living room has a terracotta linen custom sofa paired with an ottoman upholstered in a vintage tapestry, bringing color into the space with a woven jute rug,’ she adds.

In the small kitchen, oak cabinetry and soapstone countertops are paired with soft green-painted cabinets and a patterned Tabarka Spanish tile backsplash, giving the compact space a distinctly Mediterranean character. An iron pendant hangs above a farmhouse-style dining table surrounded by vintage Danish chairs, while black-framed windows frame leafy garden views and blur the line between indoors and out. ‘Collected objects and vintage pieces layered throughout bring a sense of individuality and quiet authenticity to the interiors,’ Tessa adds.
Exterior: A carved stone fountain and sculptural fire pit transform the courtyard into a tranquil outdoor living space that feels every bit as considered as indoors.

In many ways, this project is a lesson in knowing when to stop. Rather than competing with the home’s Spanish Revival architecture, every decision was made to support it, from the carefully repeated material palette to the bespoke details that now feel original to the main house. It’s a reminder that truly timeless interiors aren’t created through grand gestures, but through hundreds of thoughtful decisions that, when they’re done well, almost disappear.
