What should a ranch house look like today? For Charleston-based interior designer Suzanne Barrow, the answer had surprisingly little to do with mid-century modernism. When Suzanne and her husband bought their 1959 brick ranch in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, it was the sprawling, single-story layout that first won them over. The children’s bedrooms were at the front, the primary bedroom was at the back, and the living spaces flowed easily into one another. ‘I have always loved the coziness of a brick ranch and how the rooms flow together on one level, so the house feels connected rather than formal,’ she explains.
Located just a block from Shem Creek and close to Mount Pleasant’s historic Old Village, the house also belongs to an interesting chapter of the area’s history. When it was built, the creek was still closely connected to a working waterfront of shrimping fleets, seafood businesses and boatbuilders. Suzanne had no desire to erase that Southern identity, nor did she want to fall back on familiar Lowcountry coastal motifs.
Instead, she looked to the places that have shaped her own visual vocabulary: historic Charleston, the English countryside, Maine and her native Louisiana. ‘I was inspired by the warmth and permanence of old European homes: natural materials, collected furnishings, aged finishes, traditional millwork, and rooms that feel as though they have evolved over time,’ she says.
The result is an intriguing proposition for a contemporary ranch. Its architecture retains the ease and informality that made the typology so successful in the first place, while its interiors borrow the patina, craftsmanship and sense of accumulation more readily associated with much older houses.
Sitting room: Farrow & Ball’s ‘Inchyra Blue’ gives the built-in bookcases depth against ‘White Tie’-painted tongue-and-groove walls, with Urban Electric Belle Meade sconces topped by custom Susan Deliss ticking shades. An antique chest from Antiques of South Windermere sits beneath an Anthropologie mirror, joined by a custom tortoiseshell Hwang Bishop lamp and vintage seating.

That idea is established as soon as you enter the sitting room, where built-in bookcases painted in Farrow & Ball’s ‘Inchyra Blue’ form the backdrop to a highly personal collection of books, antiques, art and family memorabilia. ‘I wanted you to be able to see the charm of the built-ins when you first open the door as the first impression,’ Suzanne explains.
Look closely and the shelves begin to tell the family’s story. There are antique knife boxes belonging to her husband Byron’s grandmother, a black-and-white newspaper clipping showing his grandparents at the wedding of President Harry Truman’s daughter, and a photograph Suzanne took while backpacking alone through Italy in her twenties.
It is an approach repeated throughout the house. Antique chests passed down through Byron’s family for more than a century sit alongside duck decoys and wildlife prints connected to his late father’s hunting trips. These aren’t objects brought in simply to make a newly renovated house appear old – their histories are real and run deep.
Living room: A Highland House ‘Verona’ sofa is layered with custom pillows in Jane Shelton and Holland & Sherry fabrics, while cane chairs from Celadon Home and a custom Kingfisher Woodworks coffee table painted Farrow & Ball’s ‘Lichen’ add natural texture and soft color. The adjoining living room demonstrates why Suzanne was keen to work with, rather than against, the original ranch. The existing vaulted ceiling and two skylights were retained, while a triple window behind the sofa and two additional windows flanking the fireplace were introduced to draw more daylight into the room.
Tongue-and-groove paneling gives the pale walls architectural depth, while an antique Turkish rug, cane chairs, vintage tables and art are joined by a custom coffee table painted Farrow & Ball’s soft green ‘Lichen’, offset by a flash of glossy red from a vintage lacquered chest.
The fireplace provides perhaps the clearest meeting of old and new. Its brick was reclaimed from a historic house in downtown Charleston, bringing genuine local patina into the structure. Suzanne considers this room the clearest expression of her design philosophy: traditional architecture, antiques, textiles and art combined in a way that feels polished without becoming formal.
Kitchen: The custom cabinetry, designed by Barrow Interiors and made by Jaworski Woodworks, is painted Farrow & Ball’s ‘Shaded White’ and finished with polished nickel Classic Brass hardware. Open shelves frame a custom Carrara marble apron-front sink with a deVOL aged-brass Ionian tap, while vintage European stools sourced through Shoppe Found pull up to the walnut island. Overhead, an Urban Electric ‘Tripp’ chandelier in hewn brass is fitted with custom ‘Curry’-colored shades, introducing a warmer note against the ‘White Tie’-painted paneling.

The kitchen required a more radical intervention. Midway through construction, Suzanne realized that relocating a structural beam would allow them to vault the ceiling. Her husband, a builder who acted as general contractor on the project, was understandably less enthusiastic about changing course during construction. The couple had designed the renovation and two-story addition themselves, working with a structural engineer friend rather than an architect, so Suzanne knew exactly what the change entailed.
It paid off. ‘Once the ceiling was opened up, even he agreed it was a game changer,’ she says. The added height made the kitchen, and by extension the interconnected living spaces, feel considerably larger and brighter. It is now the decision she says she would absolutely make again.
Rather than filling that new volume with overtly contemporary finishes, Suzanne chose materials that could acquire character with use. Custom cabinetry and Carrara marble countertops surround a substantial walnut island, while an aged-brass deVOL faucet sits above a bespoke marble apron-front sink.
‘I chose materials that would age well rather than materials that needed to remain perfect,’ Suzanne explains of the house as a whole. Natural stone, painted finishes, vintage rugs, performance fabrics and unlacquered metals were all selected with family life in mind.
Dining: The built-in banquette is topped with a Perennials ‘Tatton Stripe’ cushion and an eclectic mix of pillows in fabrics by Jane Shelton, Vale London, Elizabeth Stuart and Penny Morrison. Antique plates join Lauren Ossolinski’s Holiday artwork on the paneled walls.

Rather than creating a formal dining room that sits unused for much of the week, the kitchen incorporates a built-in banquette beneath two windows. Pattern comes through a striped tablecloth, block-printed pillows and blue-and-white bistro chairs, while the surrounding pale tongue-and-groove keeps the corner feeling connected to the kitchen.
The dining nook has become one of the hardest-working spots in the house. ‘A comfortable spot for the kids to hang out, have an after-school snack, and do their homework,’ is how Suzanne describes it. This well-considered corner also speaks to the enduring advantage of the ranch layout: spaces are connected enough that family life can happen simultaneously rather than being divided between formal rooms.
Butler’s pantry: Cabinetry designed by Barrow Interiors and made by Jaworski Woodworks, is paired with warm walnut countertops and polished-nickel Classic Brass knobs. Elizabeth Eakins grasscloth brings pattern to the walls, while a Visual Comfort picture light illuminates At the Water’s Edge by Wilfred Spoon above a House of Rohl bar faucet.

Not every part of the original layout worked quite so well. An inefficient area containing two full bathrooms side by side was divided to create a walk-in butler’s pantry and powder room, adding much-needed storage while giving Suzanne two smaller spaces in which to experiment.
The pantry combines cabinetry painted in Farrow & Ball ‘Stone Blue’ with walnut countertops and Elizabeth Eakins grasscloth. It feels almost like a freestanding piece of furniture writ large, proving that hardworking storage needn’t disappear behind anonymous white cabinetry.
Powder room: Morris & Co. wallpaper in ‘Indigo/Russet’ creates a richly patterned backdrop for the custom floating Viola marble sink, designed by Barrow Interiors. A Waterworks ‘Highgate’ wall-mounted faucet in brass picks up the stone’s warm veining, while an antique wood mirror from Warehouse 61 introduces another timeworn element. Farrow & Ball’s ‘Treron’ on the trim and ceiling continues the deep green tones of the wallpaper.

Next door, the powder room takes the opposite approach. Morris & Co.’s dark, densely patterned ‘Compton’ wallpaper surrounds a sculptural floating sink made from richly veined Viola marble, with an antique wooden mirror adding another layer of age.
‘I loved the juxtaposition of a modern sink design with the traditional floral paper’, Suzanne notes. Even the wood-topped toilet was chosen to reinforce the cottage-like, old-world quality of the petite room.
Main bedroom: Schumacher fabric frames the windows in matching drapery and Roman shades, set against textured grasscloth walls. The spindle bed is flanked by custom Kingfisher Woodworks nightstands painted in Farrow & Ball’s ‘Hague Blue’ and Bunny Williams ‘Cinnamon’ ceramic lamps, while pillows in Soane ‘Scrolling Fern Azure’ and Walter G Orvietto Azure layer further pattern onto the crisp Serena & Lily and Matouk bedding. An antique artwork sourced from Collins and Green Gallery in London hangs above the bed.

Upstairs and down, color becomes richer and more personal. In the primary bedroom, Suzanne began with Schumacher’s ‘Sandoway Vine’ fabric, using its red and blue floral pattern for the curtains and Roman shades.
‘The bold red and blue floral drapery was the design anchor in the room,’ she explains. It gave her earthy blue-and-green palette an injection of warmer color without turning the bedroom into a completely separate decorative scheme.
An English Farmhouse spindle bed sits between custom ‘Hague Blue’ nightstands, while an antique chest inherited from Byron’s grandmother adds another family layer. Grasscloth walls and a Turkish rug temper the crisp white bedding, with patterned pillows continuing Suzanne’s mix of English country references, family history and pieces that feel gathered over time.
Main bathroom: Custom cabinetry by Jaworski Woodworks is topped with White Namib marble, with polished-nickel fittings and Alno knobs adding a cool gleam. Rogers & Goffigon ‘Cumulus’ fabric panels soften the adjoining linen tower, while Suzanne customized the Visual Comfort ‘Bryant’ sconce with trim sourced from Charleston’s Sorella Glenn. A Rejuvenation mirror and marble mosaic flooring complete the restrained scheme.

The primary bathroom is deliberately quieter, but its smallest details reveal Suzanne’s preference for customization. Cabinetry painted in Farrow & Ball ‘Oxford Stone’ incorporates fabric-fronted panels in the linen tower.
‘I wanted to add more custom details in our bathroom by adding fabric panels inset in the linen tower to conceal contents while adding softness, pattern and make the cabinetry feel more like a furniture piece,’ she explains. She even sourced trim from a Charleston shade shop and applied it by hand to the sconces, a small intervention that makes an off-the-shelf light feel bespoke.
Boy’s bedroom: Peter Dunham’s ‘Starstruck Indigo’ fabric covers the Roman shades, while the artwork draws on family travels: a signed poster recalls a longtime Telluride cowboy, and Slightly Choppy pennants were collected on trips to Big Sur. Vintage fish prints from Round Top and Mary Maguire’s nautical flags complete the display.

Suzanne approached the children’s bedrooms with the same mix of pattern, old and new pieces, and personal history found downstairs, creating characterful rooms designed to grow with them.
Her son’s room has perhaps the strongest architectural treatment: Phillip Jeffries grasscloth walls meet a stained-pine ceiling, while a pair of antique Jenny Lind beds were lacquered in Farrow & Ball ‘Calke Green’. Nautical flags, vintage fish prints and a signed poster from a cowboy the family rode with during a trip to Colorado turn travel memories into decoration.
Girl’s bedroom: The English Farmhouse cottage bed is layered with Serena & Lily bedding and pillows in Schumacher’s ‘Sun Rise Rose’ block print, while a pink Roman shade and woven baskets add softness and texture. The scalloped bedside table is from Serena & Lily, with a ‘Larkspur’ sconce and Kate Spade for Visual Comfort ‘Bryce’ ceiling light completing the woodland-inspired scheme.

Her daughter’s room takes a softer approach. House of Harris ‘Hillside on Sisal’ grasscloth, patterned with delicate branches, is paired with ‘Lichen’-painted trim and an English Farmhouse cottage bed, while woven baskets, a custom slipper chair and block-printed pillows build on the mix of natural texture and pattern found throughout the house. Artwork by Mary Maguire hangs alongside family heirlooms, bringing the same interplay of newly chosen pieces and objects with a past into the next generation’s room.
Playroom: Farrow & Ball’s ‘Skylight’ walls are accented with ‘Oval Room Blue’ trim and built-in cabinetry, while yellow knobs and a Dash & Albert striped rug bring playful hits of color. A gingham sofa is layered with Celadon Home pillows and a Loomia throw, with Penny Morrison’s ‘Anni Duck Egg’ fabric at the windows and a Fermoie ‘Red Rabanna’ shade adding pattern to the Triple Seven sconce.

The playroom, part of the new second-story addition, was designed with the next stage of family life already in mind. A closet was incorporated from the outset so the room can eventually become a fifth bedroom.
For now, however, it is unapologetically playful. Blue-green cabinetry, a gingham sofa, yellow-striped rug and colorful hardware create a room the children can properly inhabit, rather than one that has to remain photo-ready.
That flexibility reflects one of Suzanne’s biggest lessons from becoming her own client. Designing her family home made her more conscious of ‘prioritizing function, storage, durability, and comfort alongside beauty.’
Guest bedroom: Stained pine envelops the walls and ceiling, while Schumacher’s ‘Les Fougeres Document’ brings a botanical counterpoint across the custom upholstered bed and Roman shade. Serena & Lily bedding is layered with Celadon Home pillows, and a Dunes & Duchess bedside table painted Farrow & Ball’s ‘Beverly’ adds a shot of green. Vintage wildlife prints are joined by a signed pointer print by artist Kat McCall, while Visual Comfort ‘Lyndsie’ sconces with Fermoie shades flank the bed.

The guest bedroom delivers one of the house’s biggest surprises. Added as part of the second-story extension, its walls and ceiling are entirely clad in stained pine, creating an enveloping contrast to the pale paneled rooms downstairs.
‘One of my favorite reactions is seeing guests reach the top of the stairs and discover the guest room completely wrapped in stained pine,’ says Suzanne. ‘It is warm and so unexpected and not typically what you see in a Charleston home.’
The timber is balanced by a Schumacher fern print across the upholstered headboard and Roman shade, oversized rust pillows and green-painted furniture. The stained pine also offers a subtle nod to the house’s ranch roots, when wood paneling was a familiar way to bring natural warmth indoors, but here its rich stain gives the material an older, more rustic character. Repeated on her son’s bedroom ceiling, it becomes another thread connecting the original Fifties house with Suzanne’s more wide-ranging influences.
Pool: White iron furniture from Business & Pleasure Co. is upholstered in blue-and-yellow ‘Tunni Stripe’, while citrus trees in terracotta pots reinforce the garden-like feel. The landscaping was created with Brownswood Nursery, with the pool designed by Barrow Interiors and built by Meadows Pool and Spa.

Outside, rather than treating the new pool as a contemporary addition separate from the house, she wanted the garden to feel like an extension of an older European or Southern home. White shellstone paving surrounds blue-and-white checkerboard pool tile, its blue chosen specifically to relate to the house’s Farrow & Ball ‘Selvedge’ shutters. Lemon and orange trees introduce a Mediterranean note, while white iron furniture with vintage-inspired striped cushions reinforces the garden-like quality of the space.
Even the storage shed was designed as part of the composition, with a matching blue door and copper light. ‘It is a small detail,’ Suzanne says, ‘but it reinforces the idea that even the most practical spaces can contribute to the overall character of a home.’
And practical it certainly is. The pool has become part of the children’s everyday summer routine and the backdrop to their birthday parties, while friends tend to congregate around the kitchen island as the children move between the playroom and outdoors.
Perhaps that is what makes Suzanne’s interpretation of the ranch feel particularly relevant now. She hasn’t attempted to make a 1959 house pretend to belong to another period. ‘I approached the house as though it had evolved over time rather than been designed all at once,’ she says. Suzanne retained the informality, connection and family-friendly planning that drew her to ranch living in the first place, then layered those qualities with materials and objects carrying histories of their own.
