How to Plant Tulip Bulbs in the Ground

Getting your soil health right is the first step toward a thriving display. Tulips demand sharp drainage and perform best in neutral to slightly alkaline soil.
If your soil heavy, work in generous amounts of well-rotted compost or leaf mold to improve structure; acidic soils will benefit from a light application of garden lime. If you are unsure of your baseline, check out our simple guide on how to test the pH of soil.
You could also grab a quick soil test kit from Walmart to find out your soil pH. You’ll feel much more confident that your bulbs will bloom beautifully once you know if your soil needs amending.
Selecting Quality Bulbs
Always source and order your bulbs from reputable growers, and do not buy on size alone. A healthy bulb should feel plump, clean, and noticeably heavy for its size.

It’s a sign it carries maximum stored energy for spring blooms. Avoid any bulbs that show signs of mold, dark spots, deep cuts, or premature shoots.
Spacing and Depth Essentials
To create a lush look without overcrowding, space your bulbs roughly 4 to 5 inches apart (or about twice the bulb’s width), making sure they do not touch.
Knowing how deep to plant bulbs is equally critical: set bulbs deep into the soil, roughly two to three times the height of the bulb (about 6 to 8 inches down).
Deep planting protects bulbs from late spring heat, discourages pests, and stops them from splitting into tiny non-flowering offsets, giving you a far better chance of perennial blooms year after year. - Tulip bulbs should be planted around three times deeper than the height of each individual bulb. If not planted deep enough, they may suffer in really cold – or unseasonably warm – weather. For most tulip bulbs, the hole depth will need to be around 5 to 7in. If you live in a really cold zone, you may want to plant them a little deeper.
- To help you plant your tulips more easily, you can use a durable bulb planting tool is essential. If you’re planting through herbaceous plants and shrubs or through grass, a bulb planter will cut through with ease.
- Place each tulip bulb carefully in its hole, pointed end facing upwards, roots, or blunt end downwards.
- Put a little bit of compost or grit into the bottom of the hole, add the tulip bulb and backfill with grit and compost.
- Space tulips around 4 to 5in – or twice their width – apart so they do not compete with each other for the soil’s nutrients.
- Cover the bulbs over with soil and press the soil into the hole firmly.
- Water the bulbs well.
How to Plant Tulip Bulbs in Pots

If you don’t have perfect soil conditions in your borders – or you simply want to plant tulips in pots near the house – you can create the perfect environment in containers as part of your container gardening ideas.
Tulips are one of the easiest bulbs to grow in pots. You can also plant them in a bulb lasagna – whereby layers of bulbs that flower at different times can provide a prolonged display in spring.
To make a tulip lasagne, you can use an earlier variety such as ‘Orange Emperor’ (available from Amazon) planted deepest that will flower first, followed by a mid-season variety like ‘Negrita’, available from Walmart, planted above it and then finally, in the top layer a late-season one such as ‘Queen of Night’, which you can find at Burpee.
Another fun way to display tulips in pots is by placing them into any gaps in your borders. You can plunge them into the soil or sit them on top and camouflage the pot with surrounding shrubs
Follow our expert steps for planting bulbs in containers:
- Remember to select your container that will suit the height of the tulips
- Fill a well-draining container with soil. We recommend using this organic compost from Walmart. You can add some perlite or vermiculite, such as this from Amazon, to loosen the soil and improve drainage if necessary. It’s important that bulbs do not sit in boggy soil.

- Water once after planting
- Leave the containers in a cool, protected spot until spring.
One thing to bear in mind if you plant tulip bulbs in pots: if you live in hardiness zones 3-7 or are expecting unusually cold or warm temperatures, you will need to move your containers into an outhouse or garage, greenhouse or sunroom – anywhere cool (no warmer than 60ºF), ventilated and dark.

Tulips bulbs generally like full sun or partial shade – although different tulips have different preferences, so do check when buying the bulbs. Whites and pale colors work particularly well in shade, glowing out from dimly lit corners.
While some tulips don’t mind shade and a damp soil – perhaps under a tree – many prefer free-draining compost in a sunny spot.
If tulip bulbs sit in wet soil it will cause them to rot. This might mean that you need to improve soil conditions with organic matter – and when planting tulips in pots, ensure that the pots drain freely or your bulbs will not thrive.
If you have heavy clay soil, you could add sharp sand, horticultural grit, or spent compost to it. You can also add a handful of bone meal to encourage formation of next year’s flowers. You can find organic bonemeal for plants at Walmart.
Most tulips thrive in full sun, though soft whites and pale pastels glow remarkably well in partially shaded corners. While select varieties tolerate light shade, nearly all tulips demand fast-draining soil; standing water leads to bulb rot faster than anything else.
Drifts vs Trenches
For borders and cottage-style garden beds, aim for natural, fluid sweeps rather than rigid straight lines. Nestling bulbs into loose, informal clusters of five to six between existing perennials creates a seamless, professional look.
If you are planting en masse or building a dedicated cut flower garden, digging a broad trench roughly 8 inches deep is far faster than digging individual holes. Space bulbs tightly in the trench (making sure they do not touch) cover with soil, and give them a thorough soak to settle the bed for winter.

With some 8,000 varieties, in 15 different groups, tulips come in almost every color of the rainbow; only blue and true black are missing.
There are also many shapes, flower sizes and heights; some flower early, others later, so do check when you buy so that you can have a continuous display.
The small species tulips will increase naturally year after year; however, most tulips, although technically perennials, are better planted fresh each fall.
The groupings of tulips are based on flowering time, from March to May, early or late, and the shape of the flower; single, double, fringed, lily-flowered and parrot.
New cultivars are constantly being developed and take around 20 years to reach the garden center shelves.

- Species or botanical – smaller, delicate, very hardy, long-lived
- Parrot – flamboyant, ruffled petals
- Fringed – petals trimmed with fine fringe
- Rembrandt – modern, virus-free version of broken tulips

- Triumph – the largest group, mid-spring
- Lily-flowered – reflexed, pointed petals, lovely for cutting
- Single early – cup-shaped flowers
- Double early – mainly short stemmed, peony like flowers
- Single late – mainly long stemmed
- Double late – large peony-flowered, layered petals
- Virdiflora – green streaks or marking on their petals
- Kaufmanniana – compact, flowers open like stars
- Fosteriana or Emperor – large richly coloured flowers
- Greigii – ideal for a rock garden
