The Our Place is lightweight and easy to handle, while my cast-iron pot has the heft and heat retention that make it ideal for slow cooking. That’s why ALDI’s new Crofton Dutch oven caught my eye.
At $29.99, it’s an affordable way to try cast-iron cooking without making a big investment. The green and cream versions are both priced at $29.99 and are due to be available from September 2.
That price is particularly appealing when you consider that similar cookware can cost considerably more. The Our Place Perfect Pot, for example, is $50, while a Le Creuset Dutch oven can run into the hundreds. And the colors make the ALDI versions even more appealing. The green and cream finishes have a refined, heritage feel that makes them look like cookware you’d happily leave on the stovetop.

Why Cast Iron Is Worth the Investment
The appeal of cast iron is really quite simple: it holds onto heat exceptionally well. Once the pot is hot, it stays hot, which is particularly useful when you’re cooking something slowly and want a steady temperature throughout.
That’s where a Dutch oven earns its keep. I use mine for everything from soups and stews to braises and one-pot dinners. You can brown your ingredients directly in the pot, add everything else, and let it simmer away without having to dirty another pan. It’s also the sort of cookware that makes sense for colder months. A Dutch oven is practically an invitation to make something slow and comforting – a bubbling stew, a roast, or a casserole that can go straight from the oven to the table.
‘A Dutch oven is one of those pieces that can really earn its place in a kitchen because of how versatile it is,’ says Chiana Dickson, Kitchen Appliances Editor at Homes & Gardens. ‘Cast iron is particularly useful for recipes that benefit from steady, retained heat, and having a good Dutch oven doesn’t mean you need lots of other specialist cookware.’
If you’ve been tempted by a Le Creuset and the price has stopped you, the Crofton makes a compelling case for starting with something considerably more affordable. It’s also a great non-toxic cookware option, too.
Le Creuset-Inspired Colors for Less
The other thing that stood out to me about ALDI’s latest offering is the color palette. The green is the obvious choice for me – I already know how good a green Dutch oven can look sitting on a kitchen counter – but I also like the cream. Both have that slightly old-fashioned, heritage feel that makes cast-iron cookware so appealing in the first place.
This is where the Crofton Dutch oven feels more expensive than its $29.99 price tag. It doesn’t look like a brightly colored piece of cookware designed to grab attention for a season. The green and cream are relatively restrained, so they should work just as well in a traditional kitchen as they would in a more modern space.
That’s something Le Creuset has always understood particularly well. Its Dutch ovens aren’t just functional; the colors are part of their appeal. They’re pieces you leave out because they look good.
ALDI seems to be taking a similar approach here, just at a much more accessible price.
