A Toronto Home Where Every Room Has Its Own Personality
There are houses that feel beautifully decorated, and then there are homes that feel beautifully lived in. The difference often comes down to time. The best interiors are collected, reconsidered, and quietly refined over years, each layer adding a little more character than the last. This turreted Victorian in Toronto’s leafy Rosedale neighborhood is one of those homes.
Dating back to the 1890s, it had all the hallmarks of a grand period property – soaring 11-foot ceilings, original fireplaces, stained glass, and plenty of history – but it wasn’t until designer Kate Stuart, Partner at TOM Design Collective, began working with homeowners Annabelle and Scott that it truly began to tell its story. And more than a decade later, it’s still evolving. ‘The house was never furnished in one sweep or sourced from a single place,’ Kate explains. ‘It has been built slowly through years of collecting, revisiting rooms and adding things as we found them,’ she adds. Here, every room tells a different story, but together they make perfect sense.

That philosophy is evident from the moment you step inside. Every space has its own distinct personality, yet nothing feels disjointed or over-designed. A theatrical dining room wrapped in glowing gold wallpaper sits comfortably alongside a quieter grasscloth-lined living room. A Murano chandelier hangs above a well-loved kitchen table, while upstairs, a library enveloped in toile feels as though it has always belonged. Rather than chasing cohesion through matching colors or repeated finishes, Kate and her clients allowed each space to develop its own identity.
As Kate puts it, ‘There is a sense of glamor throughout the house, but it is always balanced by comfort and a little playfulness. The home is layered, romantic and distinctly British-inspired, but never overly formal.’
Interestingly, there was never a master color scheme for the whole home. ‘We did not begin with one fixed palette for the entire house,’ Kate explains. ‘Each room was allowed to have its own atmosphere, but there is connective tissue throughout.’ For Kate, cohesion comes from confidence rather than consistency. ‘Instead, we focused on giving each space a similar weight and confidence of color. Every room was treated as its own opportunity, but the overall balance was carefully matched so the house still feels cohesive rather than like a kaleidoscope,’ she continues.

What makes this project especially unusual isn’t simply the decorating, but the relationship behind it. Kate has worked alongside homeowner Annabelle for more than a decade, and somewhere along the way the traditional designer-client dynamic gave way to something much more collaborative.
‘Annabelle and I have developed a wonderful shorthand over the years,’ Kate says. ‘She is incredibly knowledgeable and enthusiastic about design, so the process has always felt like a genuine collaboration rather than a traditional designer-client relationship. She brings ideas, references and pieces she has discovered through travel, and I help shape them into an overall vision for the house,’ she adds.
That evolution also explains why the home feels so harmonious, despite each room having a distinctly different character. ‘The more recent chapter has been about continuing to refine and deepen the interiors rather than starting over,’ Kate continues. ‘Annabelle wanted the house to feel elegant and special, but also relaxed, welcoming and genuinely useful. It needed to support family life, working from home and entertaining, with quieter retreats as well as spaces where everyone could come together.’

Of course, before the layering could begin, the house itself needed a little untangling. Beneath the period charm was a floor plan shaped by decades of home renovations, including a 1980s remodel that no longer suited the rhythms of modern family life. Rather than reinventing its bones entirely, Kate focused on making it function as beautifully as it looked. ‘We allowed the original architecture to provide the structure and sense of permanence, while the renovation addressed how the family actually needed to live,’ she explains.
Kate carefully reworked the floor plan, introducing a second route into the kitchen, adding a generous rear extension and French doors that strengthen the connection to the garden, all while preserving the features that first stole the couple’s hearts – ‘including three fireplaces, beautiful 11-foot ceilings on the main floor, the turret and a stained-glass window,’ Kate describes.
The result is a home that feels wonderfully timeless rather than newly renovated. It’s rich with color, antiques and pattern, yet never precious. ‘We tried to make those interventions feel inevitable, so you experience the house as a whole rather than identifying an obvious division between old and new,’ she adds. ‘These changes gave the family more places to gather, while also allowing everyone to have a sense of privacy and independence.’

If one room best captures the romance of this home, it’s the dining room. Wrapped in a luminous scenic wallpaper and layered with coral drapery, an antique gilt mirror and a sparkling crystal chandelier, it’s completely theatrical, yet never overwhelming. Interestingly, the space began not with the wallpaper, but with the original marble fireplace. ‘The original fireplace really forced our hand in the very best way,’ Kate says. ‘Its bold marble surround became the starting point for the entire room, and we knew we needed to find something that could stand up to it rather than compete with it.’
The wallpaper became the missing piece, tying together the warm peach and gold tones of the stone while creating an inviting backdrop for Annabelle’s love of entertaining. ‘Annabelle loves dinner parties and candlelight, and after dark the wallpaper catches the light and allows the whole room to truly glow.’ Beyond, the mirrored home bar aids entertaining while reflecting the original fireplace and dining room behind.

The kitchen offers a quieter moment. Painted in soft off-white and layered with pale marble, aged brass and open shelving, it feels light and relaxed without losing the sense of character that runs throughout the house. Rather than centering the room around a kitchen island, Kate designed it instead around a generous farmhouse table. ‘The kitchen was designed around a table rather than an island because Annabelle wanted the family to gather around something that felt familiar and relaxed,’ she explains. ‘The exuberant Murano glass chandelier provides a connection back to the rest of the house. Its color and whimsy ensure that the kitchen feels just as considered and full of personality as the more decorative rooms,’ Kate adds.

Flowing seamlessly from the kitchen, the garden-inspired family room marks one of the home’s most significant transformations. Created as part of the rear extension, it’s a space designed entirely around modern family life, replacing the cramped room that once occupied the back of the house. Yet despite its newer footprint, it feels every bit as layered and inviting as the original Victorian spaces. ‘The kitchen opens into the family room, which is comfortable and slightly asymmetrical, with soft blue-greens, patterned fabrics, wicker and romantic artwork,’ says Kate. ‘French doors lead directly to the garden, making the outdoor area feel like another room.’

Upstairs, the library is a love letter to the charm of a layered London townhouse. ‘As Canadians, we have always looked to British design for inspiration,’ says Kate. ‘We are drawn to paneled walls, expressive fabrics, antiques and rooms that feel as though they have developed gradually over time.’ Anchored by the home’s original stained-glass window, the library is enveloped in a scenic toile wallpaper and lined with books, a comfortable reading area, and natural light. Kate describes it as ‘a lovely place to work, read or simply relax,’ and it’s easy to see why.

After the colorful spaces downstairs, the primary bedroom offers a welcome sense of calm. Soft tones, tailored built-in cabinetry and a floral upholstered bed create a room that feels elegant yet restful. Kate intentionally pared back the palette to create a true retreat. ‘The principal bedroom is deliberately restful, with pale green and blue tones, tailored built-ins and a small settee tucked into the niche between the wardrobes,’ she says.

The sense of calm continues into the ensuite bathroom, where soothing blue-green walls, marble surfaces and classic styling create a space that feels quietly luxurious rather than overtly grand. A freestanding bath takes centre stage beneath the window, while traditional paneling and polished nickel fixtures reinforce the home’s timeless character. ‘The ensuite continues those soft blue-green tones, with marble, traditional detailing and a freestanding tub positioned as the focal point,’ Kate explains.
Backyard: Designed by Ron Holbrook, the secluded terrace was created to feel like an outdoor living room, extending the home’s relaxed, layered interiors. Outdoor Furniture, Janus et Cie.

The garden, once disconnected from the house, is now a true extension of the interiors, furnished with the same relaxed mix of old and new found inside. Nestled beneath a canopy of trees, the terrace feels cocooning and secluded, transforming an urban Toronto backyard into a peaceful retreat.
‘Before the work, the back of the house did not make full use of the garden,’ Kate explains. ‘The rear addition and French doors created both a visual connection and an easy physical flow between the kitchen, family room and backyard.’ Landscape designer Ron Holbrook helped shape the space into what Kate describes as a ‘tranquil escape’, while the comfortable seating and fire table reinforce the feeling that this is simply another room of the house.
More than a decade after Kate first began working with Annabelle and Scott, the house continues to evolve, one carefully considered addition at a time. Rather than striving for a perfectly finished home, they’ve created ‘something personal, collected and full of life.’ As Kate explains, ‘Neither of us wants to finish a space and then consider it untouchable. We circle back, edit, move pieces around and allow the house to become richer and more personal over time.’
