Above: “Moments in Bloom, by Japan scholar Alexis Agliano Sanborn and writer Kit Lanthier, describes delicately and in accessible detail, the Japanese concept of 24 seasons, each containing five-day pentads that mark, witness, and honor minutely specific natural phenomena. For anyone who is seasonally attuned but unfamiliar with Japanese culture, its colors, flavors, and practices, will resonate deeply. We are entering Taisho, or Sweltering Heat (July 23 to August 6). The associated colors are Summer Waves, Goldfish, Sunflower, and Eel in the Shadows; the tastes are Tomato, Edamame, Cantaloupe, and Sweet Corn.” – Marie Viljoen
Above: “My friend Peter is an avid gardener with a great, low-key sense of style. The other day, I spotted the compact waxed canvas sling he carries during the fieldwork classes he takes at the NYBG (New York Botanical Garden). I’m eternally on the search for the perfect everyday tote and think this could be it. Lochby is an American company founded by a guy who spent time in the military and claims that his bags age well and are ‘deceptively spacious.’ And $59 seems reasonable—the equivalent price-wise of a barbershop haircut vs. a salon cut. Above: “File under Free Joy: There’s a community orchard here in Portland, Maine with a hillside full of lupines, free for the cutting. It was a highlight of the month to walk through the field of flowers with my clippers during their brief but glorious season and cut some to bring home.” – Annie Quigley

Above: “Three heatwaves were reason enough to opt for a staycation in France this July. Although I’ve been here for 40 years, I still love exploring locally and appreciate the richness of life in the south. Time passes differently when the temperatures soar—forced to slow down, you notice a myriad of details, and experience even the most familiar places differently. Thus, in the space of a few hours, over lunch, I watched La Place aux Herbes in Uzès transform from one of the most lively and colorful Saturday markets I know into a peaceful, shady square lined with cafés for afternoon visitors. Places have a rhythm and life of their own too…” – Deborah Eydmann
