Empty Laundry Room Wall Turned Into a Built-In Laundry Station
Laundry rooms often dedicate most of the available space to the washer and dryer, leaving everything else to compete for what remains. Detergent bottles collect on top of the machines, baskets fill the floor, and folding clothes happens wherever an empty surface can be found.
Reddit user u/Psychological-Rip-12 approached the room from a different direction. Instead of replacing the appliances, the project rebuilt everything around them with custom cabinetry, a full-width countertop, open shelving, concealed storage, and a hanging rail that turned the same footprint into a laundry room designed for washing, folding, drying, and organizing
Storage Took Over Every Available Surface
The original laundry room worked, but almost every surface had become storage. Laundry products covered the tops of the machines, baskets filled the upper space, and the vacuum occupied the narrow walkway.
Nothing in the room supported folding clothes or keeping supplies organized. The appliances dictated the layout instead of the room itself.
Custom Cabinetry Started With a Blank Box
Instead of buying stock cabinets, the homeowner built the main cabinet from plywood. Separate compartments created space for closed storage, open shelving, and the hanging section that would come later.
Building the cabinet from scratch also allowed every measurement to match the room rather than forcing standard cabinet sizes into a narrow space.
Sloped Ceiling Became Part of the Design
The angled ceiling could have limited upper storage, but the cabinetry follows the roofline instead. A long open shelf fills the highest section of the wall while the main cabinet fits beneath it.
The layout uses space that often remains empty in rooms with sloped ceilings.
Countertop Hid the Utility Connections
A raised platform behind the future work surface conceals the dryer vent while creating another shelf across the back of the room. According to the homeowner, the countertop is supported from the walls instead of resting on the appliances.
That design keeps vibration from transferring into the cabinetry during wash and dry cycles.
Floor Vent Stayed Part of the Finish Work
Instead of cutting the baseboard around the existing floor register, each molding profile continues around the vent before returning to the wall.
The detail makes the vent appear integrated into the room rather than interrupting the trim.
Washer and Dryer Became the Base for a Folding Station
The finished wood countertop spans both appliances, creating one continuous work surface for folding clothes and sorting laundry.
The warm wood also balances the dark blue cabinetry and gray walls while giving the room a furniture-inspired appearance.
Paint and Brass Hardware Completed the Built-In
The finished cabinet door, dark blue paint, and brass pull transformed the plywood cabinet into a built-in feature.
Open shelving beside the cabinet keeps everyday items within reach while enclosed storage hides supplies that would otherwise remain on display.
One Wall Handles Storage, Hanging, and Folding
The completed storage wall combines several functions in one compact layout. Open shelves hold baskets, the hanging rod supports shirts fresh from the dryer, closed cabinets hide cleaning products, and the lower shelf creates another drop zone above the countertop.
Each section serves a specific purpose without making the narrow room feel crowded.
Before and After Shows a Different Kind of Laundry Room
The washer and dryer stayed in the same location, but the room works in a completely different way. What began as a narrow utility space filled with clutter now includes storage, hanging space, folding space, and custom cabinetry built around the existing appliances.
Instead of adding square footage, the renovation gave every part of the room a job.
