Declutter Your Garage for Good
The garage might be the one spot in your home that gets the least love. It collects the overflow, the sports gear, the ‘I’ll deal with that later’ items and before you know it, you’re parking in the driveway because there’s no room left inside.
The good news? You don’t need a full weekend or a dumpster to make a real difference. Here’s how to finally declutter your garage (or basement) for good.

Start Small & Set a Timer
The biggest mistake people make is trying to tackle the whole garage at once. Instead, pick just one spot — a single shelf, a corner, a bin area — and set a timer for 10–15 minutes. The goal is to choose something you can actually finish. That sense of completion is what builds the momentum to keep going.
Use the 4-Pile Sort Method
Once you’ve emptied the area, sort everything into four groups:
- Toss – it’s broken, expired, or beyond saving
- Keep – it belongs here and gets used
- Donate – someone else could use it
- Relocate – it belongs somewhere else in your home
This simple framework takes the guesswork out of every single item. No more standing there wondering what to do with the baseball glove from 2009.
Clean Before You Put Things Back
Here’s a step that’s easy to skip but makes a big difference: once the area is empty, wipe it down before returning anything. It’s a small move that makes the whole space feel intentional and fresh — not just reshuffled.
Get the Family Involved
If the stuff belongs to everyone, the organizing should too. Getting kids (or partners!) involved isn’t just helpful — it means they take ownership of keeping it tidy afterward. Make it a team effort and even turn on some music to keep the energy up.
Don’t Underestimate the Power of the Right Storage
Here’s something I can personally attest to — last year we added hanging storage and did a complete overhaul of our garage after years of makeshift storage solutions. It was a game changer. The storage was truly the missing piece to our garage not just getting organized, but staying organized. When everything has a designated home off the floor and up on the walls, it’s so much easier to maintain.
If you’ve been decluttering the same garage spots over and over without it sticking, it might not be a habit problem, it might be a storage problem. Investing in the right system makes all the difference.

Shift Your Mindset About the Garage
If your garage is how you enter your home every day, it sets the emotional tone the moment you walk in. A little order there means you’re not starting or ending your day with that sinking ‘this place is a disaster’ feeling.
If 15 minutes doesn’t put a dent in things right away? Spend 10–15 minutes every day for a week. Every little bit helps and progress adds up faster than you think.

Ready to Get Started?
You don’t have to do it all at once. Pick one spot. Set a timer. Sort your four piles. Little by little you’ll enjoy that feeling of finally having a garage that works for you.
