Rimowa and Faber-Castell Launch Artist’s Case of My Dreams

Every artist dreams of having the perfect case for their choice of medium and supplies they can carry wherever, whenever. This week, Rimowa joined forces with Faber-Castell to bring that dream within grasp. When I first laid my eyes on the Rimowa x Faber-Castell Artist Case, I immediately fell in love with it. Then I saw the price, and I will not lie, it made my eyes bulge.

Now I am familiar with Rimowa’s body of work, so the hefty price tag of £2,180 (roughly US$2,900) shouldn’t have surprised me. But it did. Regardless, the sleek case, featuring specially designed pencils and tools, and 120 Polychromos color pencils are more than worth it. Even though my medium is oil and acrylic paints, I’d still splurge on the Rimowa x Faber-Castell Artist Case.

If you are sceptical about such a huge purchase, let me tell you what sold me on it. The Artist Case honors the German luggage brand’s legacy of supporting artists and creatives. It dons the signature grooved form factor with a stunning yet rugged aluminum aesthetic, sitting pretty on the tabletop and on the face of a rock should you choose to do a plein air study.

The Rimowa x Faber-Castell Artist Case comes equipped with a complete set of drawing instruments, all made in Germany. It includes everything you need for your artistic process from sketch to color. The case has a series of grooved 2B graphite pencils inspired by Rimowa’s grooved motif, 120 Polychromos colored pencils, and a specially created Rimowa platinum-plated sharpener and eraser.

I love the spectrum of colors and the sleek body of the case. Moreover, it opens like a two-tiered system to display the pencils in a manner that very much reminds me of a huge makeup case. Not that I own one of those either.

For ease of transportation, the case features a green leather handle, right next to engraved Rimowa and Faber-Castell logos. Whoever designed the handle, rather than making the case a backpack accessory, deserves a pat on the back. This really solves the hassle of carrying a bag, when I can simply pick the case by itself and go my way.

The one thing, and it’s not a deal breaker, that I would have loved the brands for is the inclusion of a compartment for my paper supplies. That way, I wouldn’t have to carry them separately.

Anyhow, the Rimowa x Faber Castell Artist Case is one of those things well-established artists can splurge on without a second thought, though we from the struggling section of the artist’s society may need to pause. But if you can shell out £2,180 (roughly US$2,900) on this luxury artist’s case, have fun.
