Permira has appointed Julia Liuson, former president of Microsoft’s developer division, as a senior adviser to its technology team, based in Menlo Park.

Liuson brings more than 30 years of leadership experience across enterprise software, developer tools, cloud services and AI. At Microsoft, she led the company’s global developer business, including Azure developer services, DevSecOps platforms and oversight of GitHub, and earlier led Visual Studio and Visual Studio Code.

At Permira, Liuson will work with the firm’s technology sector team and portfolio company leadership to accelerate AI adoption and product development, and will contribute expertise in product, engineering and AI to due diligence processes.

The appointment follows that of veteran technology investor Mike Hoffman, who joined Permira’s Technology team as partner in June 2026, as the firm continues to deepen the operating expertise available to its technology portfolio companies.

Permira’s portfolio companies are currently generating over $800 million of AI-native annual recurring revenue, growing at more than 100 percent year-on-year, according to the firm.

“Few people in the world today have shaped how software gets built the way Julia did during her time at Microsoft,” said Ryan Lanpher, partner and co-head of technology at Permira. “She ran the division that gave engineers Visual Studio, VS Code and GitHub, the tools an entire generation of developers grew up on.”

“The best technology businesses are built with a relentless focus on product and customers,” said Liuson, adding that this philosophy, along with Permira’s “genuine entrepreneurship and a highly collaborative culture,” attracted her to the firm.

Permira is a global investment firm founded in 1985 that advises funds across private equity and credit strategies, with more than $110 billion of total committed capital. The firm has had a dedicated presence in Menlo Park since 2008 and has backed technology businesses including Genesys, TeamViewer, Zendesk, Mimecast and Informatica.
