Talking about tiny houses may feel rather monotonous at times. Sure, what with your usual footprints and layouts. But sometimes, the industry does surprise you. Take the Summit tiny house by Californian builder JT Collective for instance. The Summit is a slightly extra-wide tiny house on wheels with a slightly typical layout, manages to surprise us.
The Summit tiny house measures 12 feet wide and 37 feet long. It packs a floating fireplace in the living area with a window seat. A loft bedroom and a ground-floor bedroom sleep four to five people, if you decide to use the couch as well.
Despite its compact footprint and somewhat familiar layout, the amount of natural light through dozens of openings and storage it has is unpredictable. It is a prime example of what downsizing without compromise feels like. There are three points of entry: A standard glass door and large trifold doors, both opening into the living area, and another standard glass door opening into the main bedroom.
As you step inside, the white walls pair immaculately with the teal blue cabinetry. Exposed wood beams add a rustic, farmhouse appeal.
From the living room to bedroom and everything in between, teal takes over all the storage spaces. The living area has a window seat with storage, a couch (which could be swapped with a sofa bed for added sleeping space), a coffee table, and a reading chair, all anchored by a floating fireplace in the corner.
The two entrances flank the space, bringing in as much natural light and fresh air as possible. Adjacent is the expansive kitchen. It packs an L-shaped countertops with expandable additions, which double as dining area. There is a ton of storage, both overhead and under-counter, so your cooking space will never feel disorganized. A slide-out coat hanger next to the main entrance adds functionality and keeps to-go clothing in line.

A subway tile backsplash goes nicely here. As for the appliances, the Summit tiny house includes a cooktop, an oven, a range hood, a refrigerator, and a dishwasher. The farmhouse apron sink punctuates the sea of teal. There is a separate fridge nook opposite the cooking area and a cool little coffee nook.
There is a sliding ladder, which neatly hides behind the fridge, providing access to the loft bedroom. It is a neat little space, idea for kids to sleep. The loft is big enough for twin mattresses or a queen-size mattress. An operable window and a built-in storage nook keep things breezy in here.
Under the loft sits the walk-through bathroom. It carries the color palette of the rest of the house. The bathroom features a stacked washer/dryer hiding inside a closet, a vanity sink, a toilet, and a glass-enclosed shower cabin.

Past the bathroom is the main-floor bedroom. It has a separate outdoor entrance. A king-size bed with storage, flanked by nightstands, and a full wardrobe occupy the footprint in the room. Multiple operable windows keep the compact space airy and naturally lit.
The Summit tiny house is priced at US$179,000, and can be customized to your liking. It is one of those designs that truly embrace the joys of downsizing without having you compromise on the little comfort of homeowning.
