Your next favorite piece of furniture could have started its life in a brewery. French brand Instead has introduced the Newport stool made entirely from recycled materials. With different heights, colors, and sustainable finishes, this versatile stool fits easily on kitchen counters, home bars, or restaurant tables.
The Newport is made from a blend of Balt and 30 percent recycled steel. Balt is made from spent beer-brewing grain and recycled PLA food packaging, heated and pressed into moulds. Its density is close to oak and is finished with a food-contact-safe, scratch-resistant varnish.
Interestingly, it takes just two liters of beer to make enough spent grain for one recycled stool. It was developed with a clear objective: to introduce the first recycled bar stool design in France that lasts long.
This two-toned product is available in three heights: Galopin, Demi, and Pinte, with eight seat colors and 100 frame color options. The five standard Balt shades are named after beers: Blonde, Brune, Ambrée, Blanche, and Stout, to perfectly suit your space and taste.
The seat is made from upcycled brewing by-products combined with a metal frame. Measuring 18 inches high, 16 inches wide, and 16 inches deep, the Galopin is the smallest option. Made from 57 percent recycled product, it is ideal for coffee tables and lounge areas.
The Demi stool has classic counter height and measures 26 inches high. It works perfectly at counters and low bars. At 29 inches, the Pinte stool has standard bar height, ideal for high tables or islands.

With the Newport stool, Instead has given brewery waste a completely new purpose. Instead of being thrown away, the leftovers have turned into a material that can be used to make everyday furniture.
The stool is a simple example of how waste can be reused practically while still keeping the design stylish and functional. This is being exhibited at Maison&Objet from September 10 through September 14, 2026.
