Flickering porch lights during Halloween will lend your house a dramatic feel. But you won’t like them much beyond that. Besides, they might lead to electrical fires later, so it’s best if you fix them as soon as possible. Alas, there’s no one solution to this problem, as there could be multiple reasons behind a flickering porch light. For starters, it might be flashing on and off simply because the bulb got a little loose.
Your outdoor lighting has to withstand severe climatic conditions. As such, it’s possible that due to multiple temperature-related expansions and contractions (of the bulb-holding fixture), it gets slightly detached and starts flickering. So, observe closely to find any loose fixtures or hardware. If that’s the case, uninstall the bulb, tighten the relevant screws using a screwdriver (or turn a common kitchen tool into a makeshift screwdriver), and reinstall it.
However, if you don’t find any loose fixtures, open the porch light cover. Then, inspect if the bulb got slightly displaced from the socket due to harsh winds. This may also disrupt continual electric supply, leading to flickering. If so, turn off the power, unscrew the bulb, clean it and its holder, and screw it back on properly. Once done, turn on the power. If the flickering stops, you’ve mended it successfully. Moreover, if a bulb has adorned your porch for a long time, it may be due for a replacement. That being said, if none of these solutions solve the problem, then you need to dig deeper.
Other reasons for a flickering porch light
A wiring-related issue is another reason why your outdoor security light may require troubleshooting. If you see it emitting sparks, hear a faint sizzling sound, or smell something burning when you pass by, know loose wires are at work. This happens because wires may contract in winters and expand during summers, and multiple such rounds may loosen and damage them. Further, your wire may develop rust or get corroded due to water seepage. In such instances, your only option is to repair the exposed or loose wiring to avoid short-circuits. That being said, don’t attempt this yourself; it’s best to contact a professional electrician if you’re not a pro-DIYer to avoid accidents.
A mismatched dimmer switch can also cause your LED to flicker. While they may prevent your porch light from attracting bugs, an old switch usually doesn’t pair as well with the latest LEDs as they do with incandescent or halogen bulbs. This can also be because not all LEDs are dimmable. So, check its base to ensure if you can pair it with a dimmer or not. And, if required, replace it with one that can be integrated with LEDs easily for an uninterrupted electric flow. Apart from these, your porch light may flicker simply because of unstable voltage. To decide whether this is the reason, run a little experiment. Connect multiple appliances that consume high electricity and observe if your porch light begins flickering. If the answer is yes, fix this by installing a stabilizer to ensure steady electrical flow to all units and devices.
