Finnish design brand Iittala has debuted the new Unda collection in collaboration with Sabine Marcelis. Featuring mouth-blown glass lamps and vases, the collection mimics the interplay between light and water. The rippled glass texture diffuses intense light while acting as an expressive focal point in the room.
The name Unda is a Latin word meaning wave, reflecting the collection’s inspiration from Finland’s unique sunlit waters. The designer was fascinated by light over rippling water and captured it in the form of a lamp.
Crafted from premium rippled glass, this cylindrical lamp has a distinct textured surface that diffuses light and lessens the intense glare, casting an ambient glow. Measuring 9.4 inches in diameter and 7 inches in height, the Unda lamp has a dimmable LED base with a 1.5-meter white textile cord. It features three colorways: soft pink of dawn, light umber dusk, and smoky grey shadow, for you to choose whatever you prefer.
This replaceable glass element is designed for low maintenance. You can clean it with a dry cloth or replace it if it breaks. Rippled glass was a good idea, but Marcelis wanted it to appear as a part of the material, not something applied from the outside. With help from glassblowers, she developed welded metal grids that helped adjust the ripple texture inside the glassware.

“Pressing the pattern onto the inside of the object is something Iittala has never done before,” Iittala creative director Janni Vepsäläinen told dezeen. “It proved challenging, but through several trials and workshops, we finally succeeded.”
The Unda collection also includes a standard-size vase standing 9.8 inches tall and a jumbo vase standing nearly 19 inches tall, in limited edition. It bridges the gap between illumination and sculptural art. This biomimicry is within reach, with prices starting from $291.
