How to Properly Make a Bed (The Clean Mama Method)

I used to think a well-made bed required a lot of effort. Hospital corners, decorative pillows, layers of throws — the whole thing felt like more work than it was worth.

Then I simplified everything.

Now making my bed takes less than 3 minutes, it looks great, and I actually do it every single day. Here’s exactly how I make it.

Why Making Your Bed Every Day Matters

I know, I know. You’ve heard this before. But hear me out.

Making your bed is a Daily Task in the Clean Mama Routine and there’s a reason it made the list. It’s the one thing that makes your entire bedroom look clean even when nothing else is done. It sets the tone for the day. It takes almost no time. And coming home to a made bed at the end of a long day? That never gets old.

It’s not about perfection. It’s about the habit.

The Clean Mama Bedding Formula

The secret to a bed that’s easy to make every day is what’s on it.

Less is more. Here’s the formula I use and recommend:

That’s it. No complicated layers, no decorative pillows you have to move every night, no bedding you’re afraid to wash.

I almost always go white — white sheets, white duvet. It looks crisp and clean, and it takes the decision-making completely out of the equation. Lately I’ve been leaning in to a printed duvet and solid sheets to switch things up. Mix and match with a striped or textured duvet cover is an easy swap.

How to Make a Bed the Clean Mama Way

Step 1: Straighten your fitted sheet

Give it a quick tug to make sure it’s smooth and tucked in at the corners. This is the foundation — if it’s lumpy, the whole bed looks messy.

Step 2: Lay your duvet flat

Shake it out, center it on the bed, and let it fall evenly on both sides. No tucking needed.

Step 3: Fold the top down

Fold the top edge of the duvet down about 10–12 inches. This little detail makes a bed look intentional and hotel-like without any extra effort.

Step 4: Arrange your pillows

Place your sleeping pillows flat first, then lean any accent pillows against them. I keep it to two sleeping pillows plus one extra — anything more and you’re just making more work for yourself every single night.

Step 5: Smooth and done

One quick pass with your hands across the whole surface. Add a throw blanket to the bottom if you want a little extra or if you use one. That’s it. Step back and admire it.

Three minutes. Every morning. Life-changing? Genuinely, yes.

The Habit is Everything

Making your bed only works when it becomes automatic — something you do without thinking about it, like brushing your teeth.

In the Clean Mama Routine, making your bed is the first Daily Task of the day. Not because it’s the most important cleaning task, but because it starts the momentum. One thing done before you’ve even had your coffee, and your bedroom already looks 80% cleaner.

If you’re just getting started with the routine, this is the place to begin. Do it every day for two weeks and watch how it changes the way your whole home feels.

My Favorite Bedding Picks

A few things I always look for:

  • Fitted sheets you can buy as separates (not forced into a full set)
  • A duvet cover that’s fully machine washable
  • White or neutral tones that go with everything and always look clean

How Often Should You Wash Your Bedding?

Great question — and something I’m covering in depth later this month.

I’m sharing exactly how to wash every type of bedding — sheets, duvet covers, pillows, comforters, weighted blankets, all of it!

Short answer for now: sheets weekly, duvet cover every 1–2 weeks. Saturday is Sheets + Towels Day in the Clean Mama Routine, so once the habit is set it all runs on autopilot.
