Are Mattress Vacuums Worth It? I Finally Tried One

When I first heard about a vacuum specifically for mattresses, my first thought was: do I really need another cleaning gadget when I already have a vacuum that I can use to clean mattresses?

My second thought was out of curiousity because I wanted to know what was in our mattresses.

Curiosity won and I ordered it. What came out of my mattress during the first pass was proof that this was a cleaning gadget worth its storage space.

Why I Decided to Test It

We talk a lot about cleaning what you can see — countertops, floors, sinks. But your mattress? You sleep on it for 7–8 hours every single night. You’re breathing right next to it. And most of the stuff living in it — dust mites, dead skin cells, dander, allergens — is invisible.

A regular vacuum with the upholstery attachment will definitely work but it isn’t designed for the density of a mattress. A mattress vacuum uses stronger suction in a focused, surface-hugging design that pulls out what a regular vacuum leaves behind.

You can find the one I use and recommend here. You’ll find that mattress vacuums are all over the place on prices – this one is on the lower end under $60.

First Impressions

Right out of the box it’s compact, lightweight, and easy to handle — which matters when you’re moving it across an entire mattress surface. Nothing about it felt flimsy or cheap.

It plugs in so there’s no charging – just plug it in and start vacuuming.

The design sits flat and flush against the surface, which is exactly what you want, you’re not dragging something awkward across your bed.The Mattress Vacuum I purchased

How I Tested It

I started with our master bedroom mattress. We have a mattress protector on it — so I wasn’t expecting a dramatic result but knowing what I know about mattresses, I expected it to pick up something, but I was surprised by how much it picked up.

The suction is genuinely strong. You can feel it grabbing the surface as you move it across. I went over the whole mattress in slow, overlapping passes the way I’d vacuum a floor — and what collected in the canister was visible and real.

Dust, dander, and fine particles I couldn’t see but was apparently sleeping on every night.

Then I Took It to the Sofas

This is where things got interesting. After I finished the mattress I thought — well, we spend a lot of time on the sofas too. So I ran it across our family room sofa cushions.

The sofa was worse than the mattress. Between the pet dander, the everyday use, the crumbs worked down into the cushions — the canister filled up fast. It was a little alarming and also deeply satisfying. I’ve now used it on every upholstered surface in the house: sofas, armchairs, and the kids’ mattresses. It works on all of it. We don’t have an upholstered headboard, but it would be great on one!

What I Love About It

The suction is my favorite feature –  it’s noticeably stronger and more focused than a standard upholstery attachment — you can feel the difference immediately. It also covers a larger surface area at a time so it works quickly.

It’s lightweight enough to use without it feeling like a workout. The canister is easy to empty and clean.

The versatility surprised me. I bought it for the mattress and it became my go-to for all upholstered surfaces. That makes it significantly more useful than a single-purpose gadget.

A Few Things to Know

  • You do need to go slowly and methodically for it to work well. Budget about 5–10 minutes per mattress.
  • Empty the canister before each use. Starting with a clean canister gives you the best suction throughout.
  • It’s a supplemental tool, not a replacement for your regular routine. I still use Cleaning & Freshening Powder to freshen and deodorize mattresses and Oxygen Whitener for stains — they work really well together.

Who Should Buy This

  • You have pets (especially ones who get on the furniture)
  • You have allergies or asthma in your household
  • You have kids — their mattresses accumulate everything
  • You have upholstered sofas or chairs that get daily use
  • You’re someone who likes to actually clean the things you can’t see

My Rating: 4.5 out of 5

The suction is excellent. It works exactly as claimed. The fact that it does double duty on upholstered furniture bumps it up significantly.

The only reason it’s not a full 5 is the cord. It’s corded, which makes maneuvering across a full mattress a little clunky — especially if your outlets aren’t ideally placed. It’s a minor thing once you get into a rhythm, but worth knowing going in. I could purchase a cordless one but I think that the charging would be more annoying (for me) than the cord.

If you’ve been curious about mattress vacuums but weren’t sure if they were worth it — they are. This one converted a skeptic. You can find the one I use and recommend here.

And if you want to take your mattress refresh even further, I use Cleaning & Freshening Powder on the mattress. Sprinkle, let sit for 15 minutes and vacuum up! Alternatively, you could mix up about 1/4 cup of baking soda with a couple drops of essential oil and lightly sprinkle it on your mattress, let sit and vacuum.
