The client came to Decorilla for help turning a small room in their 1930s home into a jungle theme nursery for their new boy. With no closets and a baby who would quickly grow into it, storage was a clear priority. The only item they were keeping was a West Elm giraffe, which gave their designer the starting point. To shape the interior by the client’s wishes, the selected professional had to:
- Design a masculine yet gentle scheme sized to the room’s tight footprint
- Build in the storage the space lacked, using open shelving and bookcases
- Choose furniture that could adapt as the child grows, beginning with a convertible crib
- Fold in the existing jungle nursery items
- Source everything else, from the wallpaper down to the throw pillows

Design Inspiration: Jungle Animal Nursery Items
The client envisioned the room as masculine, but the standard blue-and-sports nursery themes didn’t really feel like the right fit. What pulled them elsewhere were interiors built on deep green: forest tones that would ground the space and warm wood set against that backdrop. And since the room takes morning light, such a vibrant scheme would also hold up nicely through the bright early hours.
In the inspo images they saved, a plush giraffe or a wooden rocker often sat in the corner like a quiet companion. So eventually the jungle theme nursery came out as a natural solution. The styles ranged from minimalist to boho. But beyond the mood, the interiors they kept coming back to also solved the practical problems. The nursery-to-be had no closet, so the storage had to come from the furniture itself. That limit actually sharpened the final choices, because every piece now had to hold something too.
Initial Concepts: Finding the Right Designer
To match the client with the right designer, the Decorilla team put two professionals on the project. Their proposals took the jungle theme nursery in noticeably different directions, which provided a real choice in place of a single option to approve or reject.
Erika F. leaned into the pattern. Her mood board wrapped the room in a dense botanical mural, with giraffes set among broad tropical leaves and striped drapery framing the window. Maya M., by contrast, kept the pattern to one wall and let a soft neutral palette carry the rest. Rattan and pale bouclé also set a calmer tone. Meanwhile, the practical pieces did visible work with a tree bookcase, cubby toy storage, and an arched cabinet for the clothes that had nowhere else to go. Playful touches included the teepee reading corner as well as a small safari jeep the client had asked the designer to find for them.

Results Revealed: Jungle Theme Nursery
In the finished jungle theme nursery, warm wood carries across the crib and the changing dresser, then returns in the floating shelves and the tree-shaped bookcase. Set against cream board-and-batten paneling, these pieces keep the room grounded. Two arched panels in sage green, each traced with a thin neon line, give the space its one clear accent.
The starting point offered little. At under nine by fourteen feet, the room held no closet, and its walls carried a plain coat of pale grey. That left storage as the first problem to solve. The new layout builds it into the furniture and sends it upward. By going vertical, the design keeps the floor open for a crawling baby, which a room this size needs. And the changing dresser earns its footprint twice, holding clothes in its deep drawers.
Sepia wallpaper covers the feature wall, where a giraffe and an elephant stand among palms and banana leaves in muted brown. Kept soft in tone, the mural fills the entire surface and still preserves a calm register. Near the door, a sage arch lit with the words Let’s play marks a zone for the toddler stage. A ride-on safari jeep waits on the floor beneath it, tracked by the designer after the client couldn’t find what they wanted.
A bookcase shaped like a bare tree climbs one wall, its branches carrying books and small baskets toward the ceiling. Cubby units with pull-out bins sit right under. As the client asked for a space her son could grow into, several pieces carry that forward. The crib can convert as he ages to make a toddler bed later on. And when the changing dresser loses its topper after the diaper years, it will stay on as a working chest.
Transforming Challenges into Creative Solutions
The required soft masculine register comes from color and material. Deep sage on the panels meets warm walnut in the furniture, and the sepia mural keeps the nursery wall earthy. Because the room takes morning light, these warmer tones hold their depth through the bright early hours. The West Elm giraffe the client kept from the start stands by the crib, echoing the animals drawn on the wall behind it. Overhead, a rattan pendant casts a woven shadow, and a fringed floor lamp softens the glider corner for night feeds. The second neon sign, reading Nursery, sits above the dresser and answers the backlit green panels the client also had asked about early on.
Design Details: Sourcing the Perfect Pieces
Maya’s 3D renderings let the client walk through the concept before they committed to anything. Seeing the jungle nursery items and the wall treatments together, scaled and in one view, they could judge how the pieces sat next to each other and where the eye landed first. That clarity shaped the ordering, helping them also flag the peel-and-stick mural they felt unsure about before hiring the designer.
