Apollo Sports Capital invests $2.6bn in New York Yankees’ parent company

Apollo Sports Capital has agreed a $2.6bn investment in Yankee Global Enterprises, providing the owner of the New York Yankees with fresh capital to reduce debt and pursue new commercial opportunities, according to a report by Reuters.

The transaction, announced by the Yankees, will allow Yankee Global Enterprises to refinance or retire a substantial portion of its existing debt while giving the group additional financial capacity to invest in new ventures.

The Steinbrenner family will retain control of the Yankees, with Hal Steinbrenner continuing as the franchise’s managing general partner. The precise size of Apollo’s ownership interest was not disclosed.

Major League Baseball rules limit any individual private equity fund to a maximum 15% interest in an MLB franchise.

The investment values the Yankees against a franchise that Forbes estimated at $8.5bn earlier this year, although the transaction involves Yankee Global Enterprises and its broader portfolio of sports and media assets.

Those assets extend beyond the baseball team and include the YES Network, a stake in Major League Soccer’s New York City FC and an interest in Italian football club AC Milan.

Apollo Sports Capital is the sports-focused investment arm of Apollo Global Management, which has close to $1tn in assets under management. Apollo has expanded its presence in international football and became the majority investor in Spanish club Atlético Madrid in 2025.
