People Moves: Younts Named Chair of NC Industrial Commission
The North Carolina General Assembly last month confirmed workers’ compensation attorney and former Deputy Commissioner Tyler Younts to a six-year term on the state Industrial Commission.
A few days later, the state’s commissioner of labor, Luke Farley, designated Younts to serve as chairman of the Commission, starting last week.
“I am deeply honored by the confidence Commissioner Farley has placed in me,” Younts said in a statement. “I look forward to serving the people of North Carolina and working with my fellow commissioners and the dedicated staff of the Industrial Commission to ensure the fair, efficient, and impartial administration of the law.”
As chairman, Younts will serve as the Industrial Commission’s chief judicial officer and chief executive officer. He will oversee the Commission’s administration of the North Carolina Workers’ Compensation Act and other duties, the Department of Labor said. The commission handles appeals in workers’ compensation claims after deputy commissioners have made a ruling.
Younts, a native North Carolinian, previously served as a law clerk for the Commission and was a deputy commissioner for six years. He then moved into private law practice with the Orbock Ruark & Dillard firm in Winston-Salem, handling comp claims litigation and appeals before the Commission.
Younts most recently worked as deputy general counsel for litigation at the state Department of Labor, handling OSHA, wage and hour, and retaliatory discrimination cases, the department said. Yount graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and earned his law degree from Campbell University.
