Growing angelonia in pots is my favorite answer to the annual midsummer question: what can possibly look good when the patio feels like the surface of the sun? Summer snapdragon (Angelonia angustifolia) takes heat, humidity, and bright sunshine in its stride, flowering for months in containers with remarkably little fuss. Better still, its nectar-rich blooms can bring butterflies and hummingbirds close enough to inspect your iced tea.
It has the useful upright poise of a snapdragon but none of that plant’s tendency to wilt theatrically once summer arrives. Angelonia is a tender perennial in USDA Zones 9–11 and an exceptionally useful annual in cooler temperate zones.

Angelonia has been bred for precisely the conditions that make many container displays throw in the trowel: blazing sun, hot nights, humidity, and the occasional missed watering. It wants at least six hours of sun, well-draining potting mix, and a container with drainage holes. Give it these modest luxuries and it will produce slender spires in white, pink, lavender, purple, or blue from late spring until frost.
I use it whenever a porch, balcony, or back yard terrace needs height without the cumbersome formality of a miniature shrub. Its flower spikes create a clean vertical line, so even one plant can make a mixed pot look intentional rather than like a clearance-rack hostage situation.
Angelonia is also blessedly low-maintenance. Unlike true snapdragons (Antirrhinum majus), it does not demand cooler weather, and many modern varieties bloom freely without regular deadheading. It holds more potting mix, dries out less rapidly, and looks reassuringly permanent, like it has always belonged beside the front door.
Choose a pot at least 12 inches wide for one compact angelonia, or 16–18 inches wide for a fuller arrangement. Fill it with fresh, high-quality potting mix rather than garden soil, which compacts in containers and drains with all the enthusiasm of a plugged bathtub. Mix in a slow-release flowering fertilizer at planting time, then supplement with a liquid bloom feed according to the label during the growing season.

For a polished, almost Mediterranean look, plant one purple angelonia in the center of a large terracotta pot with chartreuse sweet potato vine around the edge and white bacopa (Sutera cordata) spilling over. This is the sort of combination that looks composed at breakfast and still civilized by cocktail hour.
For something bolder, try a “sunset” pot: orange lantana as the focal point, two purple angelonias for height, and white trailing lantana (Lantana montevidensis) at the rim. The colors are sunny without resembling a sports team’s merchandise, and all three plants are well suited to full sun.
My favorite is the simplest: three angelonias of one color in a wide, low planter, perhaps with a few trailing euphorbias (Euphorbia hypericifolia) to soften the edge. Repetition is deeply flattering in a container. It gives the eye a clear idea of what is happening, even when you haven’t a clue.

The Care Routine Is Agreeably Brief

Water newly planted angelonia thoroughly, then check containers every day during a heatwave. The plant tolerates some dryness once established, but a container is not the open prairie: it cannot send its roots off in search of a sensible drink. Water at the base when the top inch of potting mix feels dry, ideally early in the morning.
Feed every two to four weeks with a balanced or bloom-boosting liquid fertilizer, following the product directions. A water-soluble flowering fertilizer from Burpee is an easy option for regular container care. Avoid feeding a stressed, bone-dry plant first; water it, let it recover, then feed.
Pinch out a straggly stem if necessary, but do not fuss over every spent bloom. Angelonia often tidies itself, which is a rare and admirable quality in both plants and houseguests. In Zones 9–11, angelonia can behave as a short-lived perennial if protected from cold. Cut it back lightly after flowering and keep it in a frost-free position. In most temperate parts of the US, however, it is simpler and perfectly reasonable to enjoy it as an annual until the first frost.
You can move a particularly handsome container to the brightest possible spot indoors, but do not feel obliged to turn every summer plant into a winter houseguest. Gardening is meant to make life lovelier, not to create a municipal relocation program for flowers.
The real joy of growing angelonia in pots is that it makes summer gardening feel surprisingly calm.
